Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is also known as a Photofacial. It is a highly effective technology used by cosmetic practitioners to perform advanced skincare treatments for both therapeutic and aesthetic purposes. An IPL procedure uses the power of broadband light to reduce the appearance of rosacea, age spots, sunspots, and freckles, while simultaneously refining skin texture. It remains a widely popular treatment because it’s very affordable, effective, completely non-invasive, and requires absolutely no downtime.
What Does IPL Do for Your Skin?
During the procedure, a handheld device is safely passed across the skin by one of our highly trained laser technicians. This device delivers precise pulses of broad-spectrum light to the deeper layers of the skin. Because this technology influences the skin at a cellular level using pure light energy, there are no injections or incisions required. The device allows our providers to target specific treatment zones to address your unique skin concerns without disrupting the surface.
What Can IPL Treat?
IPL light waves are uniquely attracted to brown and red pigments in the skin, making it an exceptional option for clearing away a variety of cosmetic imperfections, including:
- Common brown or red blemishes
- Sunspots and age spots
- Rosacea and general vascular redness
- Cherry hemangiomas
- Hormonal pigmentation and melasma
- Broken blood vessels and capillaries
- Freckles
Note on Acne: While IPL can effectively treat the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or dark discoloration left behind by old blemishes, it is not an ideal primary treatment if active acne is an ongoing problem. The procedure is most commonly performed on the face, but it can also deliver excellent skin-rejuvenating results on the neck, chest, and hands.
Is IPL Painful?
The sensation experienced depends largely on your personal pain threshold. Many patients describe the feeling as a mild discomfort, frequently comparing it to the quick snap of a tiny rubber band against the surface of the skin. If you have a lower pain tolerance, your provider can easily apply a topical numbing cream prior to your treatment to maximize your comfort.
One of the most significant benefits of an IPL Photofacial is that there is no recovery window. After your session is complete, you can immediately go right back to your regular daily activities and work routine.
How Long Does It Take to Heal After IPL?
There is no true healing downtime required. Right after your treatment, makeup can be gently applied and removed as normal. However, you will want to avoid using any harsh skincare products, heavy mechanical exfoliants, or strong active acids (like retinoids) for a couple of days following your session to protect your fresh skin cells.
