Skin discoloration, including sun spots, acne scars, and broken capillaries, is a common concern. Any area of the skin regularly exposed to the sun is at risk of hyperpigmentation. Similarly, irritation and redness can affect all skin types.

At BodyLase® Med Spa in Raleigh and Cary, NC, we offer many treatments to restore skin’s even tone, reduce redness, and eliminate sun damage or scarring.

What Causes Hyperpigmentation and Redness?

Hyperpigmentation describes excessive production of melanin, the body’s natural pigment. There are three main types of hyperpigmentation – sun damage, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and melasma.

Sun Damage

Sun damage develops when the body loses its ability to regulate melanin production and overproduces melanin, creating patches of pigment on the skin. Sun damage affects all skin types and most commonly appears on the face, chest, and hands.

PIH

PIH or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is more common in people with darker skin tones. The condition occurs due to inflammation in the skin, usually from acne and scarring

Melasma

Internal body triggers, like hormone changes due to pregnancy or thyroid conditions, cause melasma. It appears as brown or grayish patches of skin and worsens due to sun exposure.

Redness can result from any inflammation in the skin. Sun damage, allergens, and over-exfoliation can increase redness and inflammation. The most common causes are rosacea, broken capillaries, and acne.

Rosacea

Rosacea is an inflammatory condition often triggered by hot or spicy food or drinks, alcohol, and extreme weather. Rosacea causes flushing, redness, bumps, and visible blood vessels. It tends to be most common in fair-skinned women.

Broken Capillaries

When capillaries dilate, they can become stuck in their expanded size and remain visible. While broken capillaries still function normally, many clients dislike their appearance.

Treating Hyperpigmentation and Redness

The team at BodyLase offers several treatments to target skin discoloration. When you schedule a consultation, we’ll discuss your concerns and treatment options.

We offer IPL photofacial, laser facials, chemical peels, Fraxel® Skin Resurfacing, and laser vein therapy.

IPL Photofacial

IPL photofacial is a versatile option for treating skin discoloration. The intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial uses short blasts of high-intensity light to target hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and broken capillaries.

IPL photofacial can reduce redness and brown spots, so it’s an excellent option for those with multiple types of skin discoloration.

Laser Facials

Laser facial collagen restoration gently heats the deeper layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production. Increased collagen heals and restores the skin, reducing redness, smoothing texture, and offering a solution for uneven skin tones, rosacea, and broken capillaries. Laser facials are also excellent at reducing acne breakouts, thus keeping the skin from developing (more) acne scarring or discoloration.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels safely exfoliate the skin and rid its surface of dead cells and debris. They effectively treat sun spots and hyperpigmentation, using a formula customized to your skin care needs.

Fraxel Skin Resurfacing

Fraxel skin resurfacing rejuvenates damaged skin. Creating tiny microthermal injuries deep into the skin, stimulating the skin to repair itself. The treatment also stimulates cell turnover to reveal fresh, youthful skin.

Fraxel skin resurfacing targets acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and rough textured skin.

Laser Vein Therapy

Laser vein therapy targets broken capillaries, vascular lesions, and cherry hemangiomas. The lasers gently pulse energy into the skin, allowing broken capillaries to be absorbed into the skin and the veins to reroute blood flow.
