Varicose veins are abnormally large and swollen veins seen on the legs and feet. Spider veins are abnormal groups or clusters of smaller veins that may be found on the face or legs. How Sclerotherapy is Done
Sclerotherapy is a treatment that is designed to remove varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy treatments take about half an hour. It involves the injection of a solution into the veins which is specially formulated to irritate the lining of the vein to cause it to scar. The scarred veins collapse and the blood flow is then diverted through alternative veins. With time, the scarred veins disappear, restoring a healthy appearance that is aesthetically pleasing. It is normal to experience a mild warm sensation or cramping during the procedure, but generally, people tolerate this procedure quite well.
The Expected Outcome
Regular activity can be resumed immediately after the procedure, although some rest is helpful. Additionally, the use of compression stockings helps to avoid recurrence of varicose and spider veins.
Spider veins may disappear in about a month after treatment with sclerotherapy, while varicose veins may take up to six months and may require multiple treatments. While sclerotherapy is entirely safe, the side effects include bruising, the formation of sores or skin darkening along the course of the veins. These side effects disappear within weeks, leaving the skin flawless.
