What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved injection that prevents and smooths aging lines by disabling muscle movement in the areas being treated. It is an extremely effective, safe, and popular way to diminish wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet from the face for a more youthful appearance. It’s also approved for use in treating excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, and for TMJ/clenching in the jaw’s masseter muscles.

How Does Botox Work?

Derived from a naturally occurring toxin called Clostridium botulinum, Botox is injected by trained providers into targeted areas of the skin. It blocks nerve signals to the muscles in these areas, preventing movement and fatigue. By allowing the muscles to rest (rather than contract), Botox smoothens the wrinkles and fine lines that occur naturally with age and repeated facial expressions. The result is natural-looking, softened skin, free of wrinkles, frown lines, laugh lines, and crow’s feet.

Filler vs. Botox

While both are harnessed to reverse aging skin, dermal fillers and Botox are fundamentally different in their approaches. Unlike Botox, fillers don’t immobilize your muscles. Instead, they utilize the gelling properties of ingredients like calcium hydroxylapatite, polylactic acid, and hyaluronic acid to add volume to treated areas. Rather than minimize unwanted muscle movement like the Botox approach, dermal fillers are meant to enhance lost facial volume or balance facial features. As the name suggests, fillers can be used to plump or reshape lips, correct asymmetry in certain parts of the face, or enhance sunken areas of skin for a younger, more symmetrical appearance.

How Long Does Botox Take to Work?

After receiving treatment, you may see Botox benefits in as little as three days — with maximum results appearing within two weeks. The changes will be gradual, but in a relatively short amount of time, you’ll notice reduced fine lines and younger-looking facial features.

How Long Does Botox Last?

After just a brief 10-15 minute treatment session, your Botox benefits will last three to four months! Maintain desired results even longer by scheduling follow-up injections every three months and incorporating medical-grade products into your daily skincare routine.

Botox Benefits

While Botox is widely known for its cosmetic applications, it also provides remarkable treatment solutions for various medical conditions.

  1. Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis): For those who experience excessive sweating — even in cool conditions — Botox offers an effective solution to manage this often embarrassing issue.
  1. Chronic Migraines: Botox injections can significantly reduce the frequency of migraines in people who experience persistent headaches.
  1. Jaw Clenching: Bruxism, a medical condition characterized by episodes of teeth grinding and jaw clenching, occurs subconsciously during sleep. When injected into the jaw, Botox relaxes the affected muscles to effectively treat bruxism.

At BodyLase, our trained professionals can discuss how Botox might benefit you — whether for aesthetic reasons or to address these medical conditions. While Botox is not a cure, it can provide significant relief and improve your overall well-being.

Botox Areas

In the hands of BodyLase’s experienced injectors, Botox can smooth fine lines and wrinkles that appear from repeated expressions like smiling, aging, sun damage, and more. Some of the Botox areas that are particularly prone to visible lines — and therefore treatable with Botox injections — include:

Frown Lines

Glabella lines, or frown lines, appear between your eyebrows and can visually cue others that you’re angry or tired. These are often known as the “11s” because the lines form the number 11.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are the wrinkles that appear at the corner of your eyes when you smile. Over time, these fine lines will remain pronounced — even when we’re not smiling.

Forehead

Surprise lines, or forehead wrinkles, become more pronounced as we get older. Because the forehead is highly visible on our face, these types of wrinkles can be a particularly noticeable sign of aging.

Lipstick Lines

The fine lines around your mouth, or lipstick lines, become more pronounced as you get older, often resulting in the appearance of a downturned mouth.  They used to be called smoker’s lines or — now with the popularity of water bottles with straws —they can be called straw lines!

Marionette Lines

Marionette lines are those that extend from the corner of the mouth down to the jawline. They can give your mouth the unwanted appearance that it’s being “pulled down.”

Chin

The muscles in your chin become more active as you age, creating an undesirable, puckered impression. Botox injections can relax these muscles and reduce their dimpling effects.

Jawline and Neck

Whether due to genetics, age, or fatigued facial muscles, prominent wrinkles can form around your jawline and neck. Depending on age and lifestyle, these lines can develop vertically or horizontally.

Bunny Lines (Top of the Nose)

Nose wrinkles, or bunny lines, are the creases that appear near the top of your nose when you sniff something.

Eyebrow

Your eyebrows naturally lower as you age, resulting in hooded folds in the skin around your eyes. Chemical brow lifts, or Botox facelifts, can reverse this process by sculpting and lifting your eyebrows for a more youthful appearance.

Under-Eyes

The skin between your lower eyelid and upper cheek can develop ‘under-eye bags’ as you get older. Since your eyes communicate non-verbally, they need to convey engagement instead of exhaustion.

Botox Aftercare

After receiving a Botox injection procedure, your trained Botox provider will provide you with aftercare instructions. Generally speaking, avoid vigorous exercise that day and don’t lie down for several hours after injection.

Your BodyLase provider will schedule a follow-up appointment 2-3 weeks after injection to evaluate your treatment’s progress and make any dosing adjustments based on your body’s response to the Botox.
