Laser Hair Removal Does Work on Dark Skin

Permanent hair reduction delivers more than a simplified grooming routine—here are other benefits clients notice post-treatment.

Resolution of Ingrowns & Folliculitis
Ingrown hairs and folliculitis from shaving are especially common conditions to see on the neck, bikini area, and underarms. Eliminating the follicle at the root resolves these issues directly—which is exactly what laser hair removal treatments do.
Smoother, More Even Skin
Many clients notice their skin tone becoming more even in treated areas over the course of their series—a benefit on top of the hair reduction itself.
Professional Support for a Foundation That Lasts
Over two decades of treating diverse skin types in the Triangle means our providers have seen and handled the full range of client presentations. Your consultation, led by our highly-trained providers, will give you an accurate picture of what to expect.

Dark Skin Laser Hair Removal Service FAQs

Below are the questions we hear most often from clients with darker skin tones considering laser hair removal at BodyLase.

Yes. The idea that laser hair removal can’t be done on darker skin is a persistent myth, not a clinical reality. The treatment uses the same process for all skin types; relying on laser settings that are adjusted for your skin tone and hair thickness. BodyLase providers have been successfully treating the full range of skin tones since 2002.

The clinical protocol is the same. Before each session, your provider determines the right laser settings for you. That individualized calibration is part of the standard process, not a special accommodation. What doesn’t change are the prep instructions, aftercare, and session spacing steps; as well as our lifetime laser hair removal guarantee.

The concern goes back to older laser technologies that weren’t built for darker complexions—and providers who didn’t have the training to calibrate across a full range of skin tones. Modern equipment in experienced hands is a different story. If you’ve been told laser hair removal isn’t an option for you, consider getting a second opinion from a BodyLase provider.

Session count and spacing are based on the treatment area and hair type—not skin tone. Most clients complete 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, depending on the body part being treated, since the laser is only effective during each hair’s active growth phase. If you need more services after your initial series, BodyLase’s lifetime guarantee covers touch-up sessions at 50% off for life.

Arrive with the treatment area shaved and free of deodorant, lotion, and makeup. Avoid sun, tanning, and self-tanner on the area for 2 weeks prior, and pause prescription retinoids 3 days before each session. Accutane requires a 6-month stop before starting treatment. We’ll review your full health history at your consultation and flag anything that needs to be addressed before your upcoming laser treatment.

Two hours is fine—what matters is arriving with a close, clean shave and no active irritation on the treatment area. Shaving the night before or morning of is ideal for most clients. Just avoid waxing, threading, or plucking in the weeks leading up to your session, as these remove the follicle the laser needs to target.
