CoolSculpting® Results, Fact or Fiction?

When non-invasive body contouring systems first began treating in medspas and doctor’s offices, a lot of people were skeptical about their results. How could a treatment that doesn’t involve liposuction or surgery facilitate stubborn fat removal? Today, many people new to aesthetics may be wondering the same thing. Specifically, the CoolSculpting® device has been around for many years now — in fact, the device received FDA approval back in 2010, about 11 years ago! But does it actually deliver on what it promises?

Some skepticism is of course quite healthy. Your body is important and risking it on potentially dangerous or ineffective treatments is, let’s say, less than ideal. Thankfully, when it comes to CoolSculpting®, the science says that you can rest easy knowing the device works. Don’t get us wrong, this isn’t a miracle weight loss cure! However, if you’re struggling with stubborn fat on your belly, thighs, or arms, it can serve as an excellent option for getting the slim physique you’ve been looking for without going under the knife.

How Does it Work, Really?

CoolSculpting® has been receiving a lot of attention, especially since its FDA approval. In fact, studies show that the number of treatments conducted using this system increased by over 800% just two years after the procedure became mainstream. That’s a huge uptick! But is the hype really deserved? Let’s look at the facts.

This non-invasive treatment relies on what’s called “cryolipolysis” to provide patients with body contouring benefits. Though the term may sound complicated, the process is really quite simple. When the device is attached to your problem area, i.e. bra fat, for example, it begins to literally freeze your fat. You see, fat cells can only handle certain temperature thresholds before they die. The CoolSculpting® device reaches the coldest temperature possible in order to kill off the cells without harming your skin.

After conducting studies into this method of fat reduction, researchers found that cryolipolysis effectively reduced fat concentration in treated areas by as much as 25%. Most impressive of all, these results were still present in a majority of patients six months after the treatment.

Results Aside, is CoolSculpting® Really Painless?

The CoolSculpting® treatment is better described as “tolerable” for most patients, rather than “painless.” As with most aesthetic treatments, there is some discomfort involved. That being said, it is not a treatment that requires an anesthetic.

The most common sensations you might experience during and after a CoolSculpting® session are:

  • A tugging sensation at the treatment site while the device’s panels go to work.
  • Some skin sensitivity along with short-term redness, swelling, and bruising right after your session is done.
  • A stinging or aching sensation at the treatment site about two weeks after your session.

Beyond that, CoolSculpting® body contouring hasn’t shown any evidence of long-term or even short-term complications. Best of all, this treatment is a good choice for just about everyone. The only people who shouldn’t try CoolSculpting® are those with specific diseases such as cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria (PCH).

Will CoolSculpting® Really Deliver Permanent Results?

The common misconception with this, and really any aesthetic treatment is that the results will be permanent regardless of what you do after your session. CoolSculpting® is one of those rare cases that can actually help you keep fat away from the targeted region indefinitely. However, this shouldn’t be taken as a green light to neglect proper diet and exercise!

No matter how effective the device may be, neglecting to manage your weight after treatment will likely result in you regaining the fat that was removed. Therefore, CoolSculpting® is typically recommended to those who are already on their way to losing weight or those who exercise regularly.
